Single Acting Hydraulic Cylinder

In a single acting hydraulic cylinder the pressurized fluid acts only at one side of the piston of the cylinder. The volume on the other side of the piston within the cylinder is either released to the atmosphere or returned to the tank. This type of cylinder primarily functions on the load and the spring for operation. In most cases the spring retracts to the sprung-out position by the force generated by gravity to extend the piston rod.

Basically, there can be two types of single acting hydraulic cylinder – in one the spring in the cylinder retracts to reset the piston rod. This type of cylinder is mostly used in the handheld devices. In the other case the pressurized fluid retracts the piston rod when hydraulic pressure is applied and the fluid is allowed to flow out of the cap. These types of cylinders are mostly used in fixed factory settings. In both cases the sprung in and sprung out positions of the cylinder is fixed and that is done with specific precision.

What are the benefits of using Single acting hydraulic cylinder?

  • It is fail safe – When safety is your main concern, single acting hydraulic cylinder is your best bet as this cylinder has defined rest position whether it is sprung in or out even during a power failure
  • The single acting hydraulic cylinder resets to the known rest position once an operation is done that makes the reset sequencing easier and takes no efforts.
  • As air is used only in one direction in the single acting hydraulic cylinder it consumes less air – it not only enhances the efficiency of the cylinder but also reduces the operational cost significantly.
  • The biggest advantage of single acting hydraulic cylinder is that it is easier to control in comparison with the double acting hydraulic cylinder.

The uses of single acting hydraulic cylinder: –

Single acting hydraulic cylinders are mostly used for clamping, drilling with hand held machines, positioning of a product on a conveyor belt, quickly and easily puncing or marking a product etc. Single acting hydraulic cylinders are mostly used for clamping, drilling with hand held machines, positioning of a product on a conveyor belt, quickly and easily puncing or marking a product etc.
