In simple terms an engine gear is a device that transmit power from one part of a machine to another part. Actually, engine gears are used to transfer the power generated by the engine to other parts of the machine in a controlled manner. In controlled manner means as per the requirement of the machine to operate. Engine gears are used in various machines in different settings. But the most common application for engine gears is undoubtedly automobiles – it can a be simple bi-cycle or a heavy truck carrying tons of load to a steep road – gears play the most important role – whether to multiply the power generated by the engine or to reduce the power generated by the engine or to control the direction of the force applied.
Roles of engine gears:
- Increase speed: If two gears are connected together where first gear has more teeth than the other gear that is connected, the second gear that is a bigger wheel will turn much faster to keep up with the speed. In this arrangement faster speed can be achieved but with much less force, that means the engine will work less with less power or fuel consumptions.
- Increase force: This is just the opposite of the earlier mechanism. In a couple of gears where the second wheel has more teeth than the first one, the second wheel will turn in much less speed but it will generate more force. So, this type of engine gears are used where we need to reduce the speed generated by the engine.
- Change direction: Gears are also used to change direction of the force. When two gears are arranged in mesh position the second gear always turns in the opposite direction of the first gear. If the first gear in the couple turns clockwise the second gear will move anti-clockwise. This type of arrangement is made to channelise the power of an engine through a specific angle. The reverse gear of an automobile is the most common example of this type of mesh gear.
